MOVIES
1977. Star Wars. Need I say more? I liked movies before then, like harassing my mom to go see the Shaggy DA on a Saturday afternoon. But I didn't actually love movies I think till the first Star Wars movie came out; the scrolling credits, the resounding music, and the huge hulk of a Star Destroyer taking up the whole honking screen.
Yes the dialogue was cheesy, yes the acting was spotty in places, but the movie was a vision of the future. The storyline was solid, and it certainly transported you to a different place and time.
MUSIC
Back in high school I was teased about my lack of musical knowledge. My record collection consisted of the Star Wars soundtrack, the soundtrack of the movie Xanadu, a number of assorted '45's and the Sesame Street sing-along album.
Over time though I fell in love with the Beatles and remember with fond remembrance singing the whole Beatles White album while the airbrush compressor was running.
BOOKS
J.R. R. Tolkien's the Lord Of The Rings was on e of the first sets of books that really turned me on to reading. Sure, in the early days there was Curious George mugs some tourists, and the Dr. Seuss books, along with the I Can Read book "Danny and the Dinosaur" But my true love of reading came along with the Tolkien books. Like Star Wars did for the movies, so Tolkien did with my reading.
SCIENCE FICTION
Because of the overlap into books and movies, this might be a bit redundant, but I decided to devote a portion of valuable web space to science fiction. Whether it be talk of popular sci fi series such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, or the X files to the latest books on the market, you will find my musings here, or more than likely, on my blog.
For those of you who stumbled upon this web site by mistake on your way to Jim's fine Spatulas, or Big Jim's BBQ Joint, please retreat now! This will not interest you in the slightest. In fact, if your here because you got this link for a job I applied for, this probably won't even rate on your radar unless you consider outside interests to be any indication of what it will be like to work with me.
For those of you interested however, and really I am interested, here are my outside interests, listed in no particular order of importance or organizational significance.
DANCING
I love to dance, and probably one of the few white guys out there who does indeed love to dance. I can dance with or without libational accent, nor do I need a partner. Am I a great dancer? Hardly. I rarely go floor chewing, or do any break dance related moves. My moves are reminders of the freestyle seventies mixed with some urban hip grooves here and there.
This part of the web site I have a brief history of my dancing as well as a few scattered pictures here and there. Let me add in here a few words of appreciation to you bouncers out there and managers who allowed access to the dance floor.
MACINTOSH
From the Apple IIe to the present I have been a devoted Apple user. I've been there since the beginning. This includes the beige years, the small gray scale all-in-one years, the days of System 4 to System 7. The even beiger years with Gil Amelio. Finally, the return of the Jobs in the late nineties as well as the reluctant sacrifice of OS 9 for the new and quite a bit improved OS X. Who can also forget the glory of the Candy colored iMacs!
I devote this portion of my site to my love of Apple, why I love it, and my thoughts about the future of Apple, and perhaps a few speculations of the future. This will not be a PC "brashest" page. After all, I think the PC and more specifically Microsoft does a good job at bashination all by itself. The products "undocumented features" speak much louder than my words.
I sense a disturbance in the force...or could it be that the Revenge of the Sith is only eight days away...
Recently sent out Novel #5 through the query process and got a few people who actually wanted to see more material.
One agency turned out to be a scam operation living off of retainer fees, but two more turned out to give legitimate advice on how to improve the novel.
April 29th signifies the coming of Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy as well as Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
This day also signifies the 534th resume sent out without a response. Is anyone out there receiving me? Maybe I am just talking into the electronic either..
